Summary:
Eve Wilson's face was once scarred by a vicious assault. Terrified and ashamed, she escaped to the online realm, where she could choose the face she allowed people to see. Years later, her outer scars faded and inner scars buried, Eve has fought her way back to the real world and is determined to help others do the same. Now a graduate student moonlighting as a bartender, Eve researches the addictive powers of online communities. When her test subjects begin turning up dead as a result of apparent suicides, she doesn't know where to turn.

Homicide detective Noah Webster is one of the few people who believe the victims are connected murders. Eve becomes Noah's online guide and realizes that the handsome detective may have secret scars as painful as her own. As Eve and Noah chase a killer who is always one step ahead of them, together they try to overcome the tragedies of their pasts and learn to trust again, but they soon discover that danger is much closer than they think.

Hey guys! Back with another spook book. I miss October already! Also, a quick note, I haven't been able to take a trip to the library yet this month, but I've made some reservations for books, so when they come, I'll do a big haul post. Okay, back to the review.

I read this book a couple years ago, and re-borrowed it for a review. To be honest, it's not as exciting when you read it a second time, but the conclusion (aka when the killer is revealed) still came as a surprise to me. I do remember the first read being very "edge of the seat" thrill.

Eve is one of the most heroic people I think I've ever read about. She was a victim to a serial killer and nearly died protecting a boy and his mother. The physical scars have faded 'cept for the one around her throat which she wears chokers/turtlenecks to cover up, but the nightmares still keep her up at night. Now, in her own little story, she is once again a victim to another serial killer who has virtually no tie to the first one, targeting her because she just knows too much.

Noah, and forgive me Noah-lovers for saying this, is a pretty average main guy character. He rushes in to save the day, does a bit of falling in love with heroine of book in the process, kicks bad guy's butt, and happy ending. I did like the minor touch of sarcasm and in depth look into his feelings which gave him a bit more "definition" than just a regular character. So, he's average, but not that average.

The game. (For those of you who know what I'm referring to: YOU LOST THE GAME!) Moving on, Shadowland is this video game that Eve is researching in, seeing the number of hours people spend on the game and correlating that to age, gender, job, etc. I personally thought that was really cool and I would love to take part in a research project like that. Shadowland essentially becomes the hunting ground for the killer who preys on lonely, depressed women who spend hours, literally, HOURS online. He asks them to meet up playing a innocent, lonely guy and these girls just fall head over heels for the act.

What I thought was really scary, but cool was how he would recreate their Shadowland house to represent the crime scene in real life. It was really spooky, but technologically speaking, that has got to be pretty cool. The killer also targeted the fears of the women, using it as a "fear factor" to get them even more freaked out before killing them. Which is also pretty scary.

Again, the ending was completely unexpected, but for a first read, I think it'd be quite the thriller. So enjoy~~

"Life is too short to stand back and watch from the sidelines."

"No more dipping our toes in. From here on out, it's just one big cold pool. Cannonballs, big splashes. Babe.
"Sounds painful."
"Actually, the water's pretty warm." (Just a little look into the humor.)

3 out of 5 stars

Foreverly Obsessed,
Riv
