Summary:
Gabby lives by two unbreakable rules: don’t expose her kind, the Sary, and don’t fall in love—too bad some rules are made to be broken.
When Gabby’s most difficult charge accidentally shoots her in front of a class full of students, the event exposes her carefully hidden identity. She shifts from looking like a normal teen to her secret Sary form, revealing her wings and the existence of her kind—immortals who try to keep people from committing suicide. Her incident attracts the attention of the next leader of the Sary, Jassen, who offers her an impossible bargain: she can keep her wings if she makes amends with those who know the truth. Things get more complicated when a rebel Sary, intent on exposing them to the world, starts interfering with Gabby’s work. And there’s no denying her attraction to Jassen, who is torn between his duties and his heart. With threats at every turn and her immortality on the line, Gabby has to find a way to save the Sary or surrender the sky forever.

Gabby is a Sary. What is a Sary? They are guardian angels, for the depressed and suicidal. At first, I wasn't sure how to react, I had just finished a couple books that regarded guardians angels and I have to admit, the idea was really intriguing. Sarys are "angels" assigned to lead one who is depressed and suicidal off that path and onto a happier more positive one. From the start, we get to see Gabby as a compassionate character. She feels for her assignments and now that she's failed one and risked so much, her guilt and sadness is just overwhelming. In the midst of chaos, there are several factors to consider. One, Jassen, the future leader to be of the Sarys who she is super attracted to. And two, Leon, Jassen's twin brother who is evil and wants Sarys to rule humanity.

My one biggest problem was how disconnected I felt toward the characters. Gabby was very compassionate, full of emotion and kindness, but none of that clicked with me. I got a bit annoyed at her angst towards her relationship with Jassen. For two Sarys to be together is like extreme taboo but nobody said it was forbidden. We were told that she had always liked him from afar, but I still got the insta-love buzz. Jassen wasn't much better, he was all big and aloof one minute, and the next he's taking her up to the sky so they can have a moment. Please, just admit you guys have feelings, and let's move on from there.

My favorite part of the story was Bea. Bea is one epic best friend. She just found out that Gabby isn't who she said she was, her classmate committed suicide, and now she's pulled into operation calm humanity down. Guess what? She takes it all into stride. No complaints, no scenes, just accepts it and continues to support her friend. I have very conflicting feelings about Nathan especially for what he did to Gabby, but if he makes Bea happy he can stay.

Leon, how do I even begin to describe Leon. Twisted is one way. He has this really crazy twisted vision for the Sary. He wants them to use their powers not only to lead the depressed, but also to heal the injured. But the consequence of that is humanity's worship. Those two just do not go together, so my conclusion, he is one twisted guy.

Surrender the Sky is full of just provoking thoughts about humanity, about your powers, your purpose, and how to accept failure when it comes at you. While I didn't love the main character, I still enjoyed the story a lot.  Meradith Houston is super talented when is comes to describing perfectly beautiful scenes in the clouds as Gabby flies and enjoys the feeling of being free. I definitely want to check out the first two books in the series (they're all stand-alone) to learn a bit more about the Sary because honestly, they are super interesting. And despite everything about Leon, a tiny part of me feels for him, just a tiny part. He can't be all bad right?

AUTHOR BIO
Meradeth HoustonMeradeth’s never been a big fan of talking about herself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about her:

She’s a Northern California girl. This generally means she talks too fast and use “like” a lot.
When she’s not writing, she’s sequencing dead people’s DNA. For fun!
She’s been writing since she was 11 years old. It’s her hobby, her passion, and she’s so happy to get to share her work!
If she could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because she’s terrified of heights.
