Initial Reaction:
Apolline is happy hunting magical creatures on her pirate infested outer-perimeter planet. She is a fantastic shot, and doesn’t flinch at the blood and guts of her kills. Never once did she consider she could be the missing Princess of Tyrone.
All her life, she has heard the story of the Princess, cursed to sleep for eternity, unless her betrothed, the Prince of Oran, gave her true love’s kiss. Although Apolline knows she is betrothed, she thinks her fairy guardians arranged it out of ignorance of human ways. The thought she could be a princess is inconceivable.
Then Allard appears. Handsome, charming—but he’s not hers to have. He’s betrothed, too. Her guardians warn her against her new found friendship, but she and Allard meet in secret anyway. Despite her rough exterior, he sees beyond her gun-slinging bravado, and their love blossoms.
But the deadline for the sleeping curse is approaching. If Apolline falls in love with the wrong person, she could end up sleeping forever.
A quirky, adventurous retelling of Sleeping Beauty, with a less than princess-ly princess!
Hello everyone! Welcome to my tour stop for the Princess of Tyrone! As always, be sure to check out the tour banner above to check out some of the other tour stops.

The Princess of Tyone is a science fiction re-telling of Sleeping Beauty complete with all the fun elements of sci-fi and magic. Right from the start, we are introduced to Apolline who is one of the best huntresses on the small planet of Mish and she lives with her three fairy aunts with no recollection of who she is. One of her aunts, Fantine, tells her the story about the Lost Princess of the King and Queen. Then we meet Allard, he's "Sleeping Beauty's" betrothed and as the date to their wedding approaches, he starts getting a small case of cold feet and meeting Apolline doesn't help to squash his nerves.

I felt like the execution of this story was so well planned out with every single thing falling into place at the right time. The characters were pretty well designed and I enjoyed how Katie Hamstead wove in a couple other fairytales into the plot. I'm not sure if the Princess of Tyrone is somehow the third installment of sci-fi fairy tale goodness but if it is, someone please let me know where I can get my hands on some copies.

Like all good fairytales, you must have a villain and this story put an interesting twist on the "Maleficent" figure. She's actually related to Sleeping Beauty's mother and wants to seek revenge on her for stealing the king's affections. I have to say, I really liked how she was so vengeful, as bad as that sounds because it really added more the story and made everything seem more dire.

This story is unlike any other Sleeping Beauty rebellings that I've read about and it is definitely one of the most interesting takes on the classical tale. I'm usually not a fan for sci-fi books but this one managed to catch my attention and keep it.
